The Baron de Hirsch Cemetery Inc. is responsible for the maintenance and care of two of Montreal’s oldest Jewish Cemeteries, the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery and the Back River Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Both of these sites have cemetery land owned by the BDH Community Foundation as well as other large and small affiliates, Synagogues, burial societies.
The grounds of the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery are well worth exploring. The cemetery is the burial site of numerous personages who contributed to Jewish life in Montreal and elsewhere. Included among, but certainly not limited to, is the author and poet A.M. Klein, Leopold Weisz a victim of the Titanic sinking, Rabbi Yudel Rosenberg, known for his translation of the Zohar-the sourcebook of kabbalistic lore-Rabbi Zvi Cohen who passed away at age ninety and had over six thousand people attend his funeral. The largest Jewish funeral ever held in Montreal. These are only a few of the names of personages buried on these grounds who have contributed to Jewish Life in Montreal.
The Back River Memorial Gardens Cemetery, dating back to the late 1800’s has undergone a massive restoration of its grounds. With the generous support of Montreal’s Jewish Community and the government of Quebec, a $3,000,000 restoration project was completed, which returned the Back River Cemetery to the historical landmark that it truly represents. . A further milestone occurred in 2008, the Back River Cemetery joined with the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery, ensuring the future, so that families will always be able to visit the cemetery in a setting that exudes serenity and respect.
